NAT`L 2010 RICE PRODUCTION TARGET SET AT 66 MILLION TONS
Mataram, Indonesia, Jan 30 (ANTARA) - Agriculture Minister Suswono said the government's rice production target for 2010 had been set at 66 million tons.
"This means national rice production is expected to rise by 3.2 percent from 63 million tons in 2009," he said here on Saturday.
To reach the target rice field potentials would be optimized despite technical constraints that had always hindered the effort such as limited water supply caused by illegal logging activities and conversion of agricultural land into industrial areas.
"Serious efforts must be made so that agricultural land will not deplete due to industrial development," he said.
Suswono said the government had issued Law Number 41 of 2009 for the protection of agricultural land.
The law states that agricultural land must be preserved to ensure food resilience in the future.
"A government regulation on the law's implementation will soon be issued to ensure prompt compliance," he said.
He said regional governments must support the national program of increasing rice fields to ensure the success of the national food self-sufficiency program by 2014.***
