WILD ANTELOPES FROM MONGOLIA MIGRATE TO RUSSIAN REGION
Ulaanbaatar, /MONTSAME/ Authorities in Siberia's Baikal region of Russia are facing an emergency on the border with Mongolia caused by a mass influx of wild antelopes.
About 40,000 animals have already entered Russia from Mongolia, up to 70,000 others have gathered just across the border. While entering Russia, they cause minor structural damage, though the main problem regarding the migration is the potential risk of poaching, according to the sources.
Wild antelopes are on the endangered species list in Russia, but with these very large numbers migrating, managing their survival becomes increasingly challenging, even when keeping in mind the huge fines (up to $10,000) and two-year jail sentences for poaching in Russia.
A similar influx occurred in mid od 2008, with the main cause of the migration being a lack of food.
