Chavez critical of EuroParliament directive on illegal immigrants
CARACAS, June 20 (Itar-Tass) -- Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez has strongly criticized the European Parliament for its approval of tighter measures against illegal migrants. Under the new rule, to go effective in two years' time, immigrants without documents will be detained for up to 18 months and banned from entering EU countries for another five years.
Venezuela will take retaliatory sanctions against those European
countries whose governments follow this discriminatory policy against
Latin American immigrants, Chavez told a news conference on Thursday.
"Those countries will not get a drop of Venezuelan oil," he said.
Also, Venezuela may terminate European companies' operation in oil
production and other branches of its economy.
At the same time Chavez expressed the hope that the governments of EU
countries would oppose the European Parliament's directive.
Chavez addressed the Organization of American States and the African
Union to present a common front "to defend the dignity of their citizens
from discrimination by the European Union."
