MORE FOREIGN TOURISTS VISITING N SULAWESI
Manado, N Sulawesi, Feb 2 (ANTARA) - The 2009 World Ocean Conference and Sail Bunaken had brought positive impacts on North Sulawesi province`s tourism industry, a government official said.
"It is common to see a small number of foreign tourists in December but last December we found an increase of 16.44 percent of foreign visitors to Manado," Jasa Bangun said here Tuesday.
The head of North Sulawesi`s Bureau of Statistics said Malaysian tourists remained dominant visitors followed by those of other Asian countries, such as Singapore and Japan.
Bangun said a total of 437 Malaysian holiday makers visited North Sulawesi last December, while Singapore and Japan respectively contributed 271 and 126 tourists.
Besides Asian tourists, those of European countries, the United States and Australia also chose North Sulawesi as their holiday destination, he said.
The United Kingdom gave the biggest contribution with 120 tourists, followed by the Dutch, German and Italian visitors, he said.
The Americans and Australians were also potential markets for North Sulawesi`s tourism industry. During December 2009, a total of 121 Americans and 104 Australians visited the province, he said.
Last year, North Sulawesi hosted the World Ocean Conference aimed at addressing the issues of global warming impacts on coral reef and marine resources.
The province also hosted a few hundreds of international sailors participating in the Sail Bunaken.
North Sulawesi is famous for its Bunaken Marine Park. The park has a total area of 89,065 hectares, including those of Bunaken Island and the islands of Siladen, Manado Tua, Montehage and Nain.
The Bunaken Marine Park reportedly has thousands of species of coral fish so that it is popular among local and international divers.
The Indonesian ministry of culture and tourism has targeted seven million foreign tourists entering Indonesia in 2010 with a total income of 6.75 billion US dollars.
The ministry also expected to gain an income of 138 trillion rupiah from 230 million domestic travelers along this year.
Compared to last year, Indonesia could only receive 6.459 million foreign visitors.
This number increased about 0.4 percent from that of 2008 despite the global crisis as well as hotel bombing and swine flu cases.
