Russian “Ward Number Six” takes home two Crystal Simorghs

TEHRAN, Feb. 3 (MNA) -- Anton Chekhov’s short story “Ward Number Six” from Russia took home two Crystal Simorghs at the international section of the 28th Fajr International Film.

Directed by Karen Shakhnazarov, the movie took the Best Film Award and Vladimir Ilyin was named the Best Actor in this section.

The international section of the 28th Fajr festival wrapped up here on Monday handing almost every competitor an award! The festival which opened on January 23 will conclude on February 4.

The ceremony at Milad Tower, attended by the press, artists, jurors and foreign competitors, was packed with loads of awards handed out to a plethora of winners in this section.

The Crystal Simorgh for best director went to Adrián Biniez “Gigante” a joint production of Uruguay, Germany, Argentina, and Spain; and Iranian director Ebrahim Hatamikia took the Crystal Simorgh for best screenplay for his ban-lifted political drama “In the Color of Purple”.

“This crystal represents five years. It took me fives years to get this,” said Hatamikia after picking up his Crystal Simorgh.

The film tells the story of a romance between an Iranian intelligence agent and the daughter of an opposition group leader.

Iranian Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance lifted the ban on screening “In the Color of Purple” in October. The decision to lift the ban was made following a meeting between Hatamikia and Deputy Culture Minister for Cinematic Affairs Javad Shamaqdari.

Iran’s “Evening of the 10th Day” by Mojtaba Raei, an entry to the National Competition Section, was selected as the Audience Favorite Film at the international section and took home a Crystal Simorgh.

The Special Jury Prize was presented to “The World is Big and Salvation Lurks around the Corner” by Stephan Komandarev, a joint production of Bulgaria, Germany, Slovenia and Hungary.

The ceremony continued with presenting awards to winners at the Asian Cinema Competition Section.

“True Noon” from Tajikistan took two Crystal Simorghs for best film and best director. The film is produced by Rustami Joni and is directed by Nosir Saidov.

The Chinese “The Equation of Love and Death” by director Cao Baoping was handed the Best Screenplay Award and the Jury Special Award was presented to “Farewell, Gulsary!” by Ardak Amirkulov from Kazakhstan.

Afterwards, the prizes were presented to winners of the side programs in the international section.

The 8,000-euro cash prize of the Moustapha Akkad award which was renamed the Golden Flag (Beiraq Talaii) was handed to Iran’s “The Kingdom of Solomon” by Shahriar Bahrani.

The “Turquoise Road” Award organized by ECO at the section “Cinema in ECO Countries” was handed to “Wrong Rosary” by Mahmut Fazil Coskun from Turkey.

A new award named “Path of the Prophets” was also presented to Homayun As’adian’s “Gold and Copper” from Iran.
