CHINESE ABOARD ILL-FATED "DOLPHIN" LACKED REQUIRED IMMIGRATION PAPERS
Ambon, Maluku, Indonesia, Feb 3 (ANTARA) - The 24 Chinese nationals on board the ill-fated speedboat "Dolphin" were not in posssession of the legal documents required to enter Indonesia, a local immigation official said.
The Dophin was carrying 33 people when it sank in Maluku waters last Wednesday (Jan 27) while rescue teams later found only one survivor and seven dead bodies.
Leo Detri, head of Maluku's immigration office, said here Wednesday, he had coorodinated with his counterpart in Tual, capital of the district in whose waters the accident happened, but no data were to be found regarding the status of the 24 foreigners.
"Tual immigration had checked on their documents to provide special immigration facilities for foreigners who conduct activities at sea but it turned out the speedboat passengers lacked the required permits," he said.
The Tual immigration office would also contact the directorate general of immigration in Jakarta which handles the issuance of permits for foreign workers to obtain more data on the 24 Chinese nationals, Detri said.
The fact that the Chinese nationals aboard the Dolphin were described as people working for a construction company indicated foreign workers were being illegally employed in the Aru Island group, he said.
According to Billy Picarima, admnistrator of Dobo port, the Dolphin carrying 33 people including the 24 Chinese workers had left for Tual without a sailing permit.
The 24 Chinese citizens had a work contract with PT Arabika Jaya Tama (AJT) to build a factory in Warabal, Penambulai Island.***
