GOVT PROVIDES FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR SEAWEED DEVELOPMENT IN NTT

Kupang, Indonesia, Feb 3 (ANTARA) - The central government through the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has set aside tens of billions of rupiahs to help farmers in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT)cultivate seaweed, a local official said.

The State Budget funds would be part of the Special Allocation Fund (DAK) and De-concentration Fund and be given directly to district governments in East Nusatenggara province, Rashid Djama Luddin, an East Nusa Tenggara Marine and Fisheries offical, said here Wednesday.

Each district in East Nusa Tenggara province would receive Rp700 - Rp800 million from the De-concentration Fund and Rp2-5 billion from the Special Allocation Fund, he said.

"The De-concentration Fund amounts to more than Rp10 billion and the Special Allocation Fund more than Rp30 billion, each of the 17 districts in the province would receive Rp1-5 billion, but Maumere district would get Rp5 billion.

The financial assistance was to be provided for seaweed development aimed to meet the target set by the maritime resources and fisheries ministry.

"There is a lot of funding to boost seaweed development, but each district has the obligation to increase seawwed production because the central government wants East Nusa Tenggara to meet 40 percent of the country's need for seaweed," he said.

Therefore, district governments should pay serious attention to seaweed cultivation and utilize the funds to achieve their respective production targets, he said.

Everybody in the province must help control the use of the government aid so that the seaweed production targets can be achieved.

Members of the community should not be afraid to report to law enforcement officers if they notice the funds were misused for personal or group interests and not in accordane with the intended purpose, Rashid Djama Luddin said.***
