VIENTIANE,FEB 3-(KPL) The Soochow University of China’s Jiangsu Province on Tuesday awarded honorary PhD to President Choummaly Sayasone and Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh, in recognition of their outstanding leadership in national development and the development of relations between Laos and China to a higher level.
A ceremony to present the degrees to the two Lao leaders was held by the President of Soochow University, Professor Dr Zhu Xiulin, at the Presidential Palace (Hor Kham) in the Laotian capital of Vientiane, witnessed by officials of Laos and China.
“His Excellency Choummaly Sayasone is a revolutionary politician who is well-known among Chinese people. He has a high level of knowledge and a lot of experience. He is an important leader of the Party, government and the nation. He has passed the test of wars, he is a person who has deep solidarity with the People’s Republic of China and the Chinese people, and he is committed to continually building relations, cooperation and joint development between our two parties and nations,” said Prof. Dr Zhu Xiulin in describing the good deeds of Mr Choummaly, who is also the Secretary General of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party.
Prof. Dr Zhu Xiulin also described Lao Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh as a politician with high knowledge and far-sighted vision. He said Prime Minister Bouasone was a person who promoted the “renovation policy” in line with the resolutions of the Eighth Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party.
He has been diligent in socio-economic development and attending to the well-being of the people. He has also attached importance to the relationship and cooperation strategies between Laos and China.
Suzhou University was established in Suzhou city in China’s Jiangsu Province by missionaries of the American Methodist Church in March 1900, by merging three already existing schools, the Buffington Institute and the Kung Hang School in Suzhou and the Anglo-Chinese College in Shanghai. In Chinese, the university’s name is “Dong Wu” University, meaning “Eastern Wu” University, because Suzhou is located in the area which was the eastern part of the State of Wu in early Chinese history.
Suzhou University signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the National University of Laos last year.
There are now 72 Lao students studying at Suzhou University, over half of them on various scholarships.
