JOURNALISTS FROM EAST ASIA TO MEET IN JAKARTA NEXT MONTH

JAKARTA, Feb 3 (Bernama) -- Some 40 senior journalists from the East Asian
region will be meeting here next month to discuss the role and work of the news
media in reporting issues on politics, religion and culture.

The event, from March 8 to 11, will also feature senior academia and
political figures from the region.

According to the Asean Secretariat here, the participants will focus on
subjects like the role of the news media in reporting on cultures, wars and
conflicts, democracy and the daily challenges and opportunities facing
journalists working on inter-cultural issues.

The "East Asia Regional Media Programme 2010: Journalism at the Intersection
of Politics, Religion and Culture" is organised by the New Zealand government,
with co-funding from the European Union as well as support from the East Asia
Summit, the government of Indonesia and the Indonesian Press Council.

The event is the second in a series.

The first programme, held in November 2008 brought together 45 senior
journalists and editors to discuss the coverage of sensitive regional issues.
