World needs new legal base for energy cooperation - MP
MOSCOW, February 4 (Itar-Tass) - The creation of a new legal base for
international energy cooperation is principally important for reliable
supply of power to people across the globe, said Valery Yazev, the deputy
speaker of the Russian State Duma.
He will take part in the Munich Security Conference along with Vice
Premier Sergei Ivanov, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and the chairman of
the Duma international affairs committee, Konstantin Kosachev.
"The resource base became one of the most important components of
international security and created the groundwork for social and economic
development of people and states," he told Itar-Tass.
"Russia that owns huge reserves of hydrocarbons and technologies
necessary for the closed cycle of nuclear power stations realizes its
responsibility for ensuring global energy security and plans to join
common efforts towards guaranteeing reliable power supply to mankind,"
Yazev said.
"It seems principally important for us to create a new legal base for
international cooperation in the energy sector. As a basis for such
cooperation we see a conceptual approach, a document on energy cooperation
proposed by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev last April," he said.
The Munich Security Conference is one of the most important platforms
for discussing pressing problems of security in Europe and on the
Euro-Atlantic space. Annually it brings together over 300 delegates from
over 40 countries - NATO and EU member-states - as well as from countries
that play an important role on the world scene such as Russia, China,
Japan and India.
