By Vincent Low
BEIJING, Feb 5 (Bernama) -- The city traffic police have beefed up
enforcement against drunk driving since yesterday, in view of social gatherings and parties organised by companies for their staff, prior to the Spring Festival.
This follows records of previous years where drunk driving was at its peak
during the two weeks before the festival.
According to police statistics, about 10,890 drivers were caught drunk
driving between 2007 and last year.
In 2006, 1,373 people were killed in traffic accidents here. Of the number,
375 fatalities were due to drunk driving.
There are 1.45 million motorists in Beijing which has 1.14 million cars on
its roads.
