Russian peacekeepers mark professional holiday
SUKHUMI, June 21 (Itar-Tass) - Russian peacekeeping forces are marking on Saturday the 14th anniversary of the establishment of CIS collective peacekeeping forces (KSPM).
On June 9, 1994, the Russian president issued a decree on
participation of a Russian military contingent in the CIS peacekeeping
operation in the zone of the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict. On June 16,
1994, Russia sent the contingent to the conflict zone and on June 21, the
peacekeepers were deployed in the area. This date is regarded as the day
of the establishment of CIS KSPM.
The peacekeeping activities of the Russian military contingent are
carried out on the strength of the mandate, approved by CIS heads of
states. It was repeatedly prolonged and updated.
It was last prolonged in 2003.
Alexander Novitsky, an aide to the KSPM commander, told Itar-Tass that "The Russian military contingent in the zone of the Georgian-Abkhazian
conflict totals some 2,500 personnel at present."
"During their mission, servicemen carried out certain work to prevent
an escalation of the armed conflict. They cleared part of the area of
mines and provided assistance to the population to the Gali and Zugdidi
districts," Novitsky said.
"During 14 years, more than 5,000 offenders have been detained and
disarmed, thousands of units of small arms and a tremendous amount of
ammunition have been seized, more than 20,000 explosive objects have been
destroyed and assistance has been provided to dozens of thousands of
civilians," he said
The leadership of the self-proclaimed republic of Abkhazia provides
considerable support and assistance to the Russian peacekeepers. It
condemned the provocations against KSPM on the part of Georgia, which have
increased in the recent time.
A wreath laying ceremony will take part in Sukhumi at the monument to
dead Russian peacekeepers.
Taking part in the ceremony and a meeting will be representatives of
the Russian defense ministry, the KSPM command, and Abkhazian officials.
In the Sukhumi House of Officers, Moscow comic opera artists and
amateur talent groups will perform for Russians and all holidaymakers.
