Presidents Medvedev and Lukashenko to meet in Brest
MOSCOW, June 22 (Itar-Tass) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will visit Brest, a fortress on Belarus' border with Poland, on June 22 at the invitation of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. Russia has been marking June 22, the date when fascist Germany attacked the Soviet Union in 1941, as the Day of memory and grief since 1996.
The Brest fortress was the first to be attacked by the German invaders back in 1941.
Alexander Lukashenko and Dmitry Medvedev will lay wreaths to the
Eternal fire and a memorial to the defenders of the Brest fortress. They will also meet the veterans of the Great Patriotic War, the Kremlin press service reports.
Besides, the leaders of the two countries will use this occasion for holding a separate meeting to discuss Russian-Belarusian cooperation.
"The main emphasis is expected to be put on the need to further
strengthen the economic basis for bilateral relations," sources in the
Kremlin said.
"A course towards using universal market principles in trade and
economic relations that was adopted in 2007 has justified itself
completely," the Kremlin source went on to say.
In 2007, the trade turnover increased by 30.7% to reach $26 billion. The turnover grew at a higher rate in January-April 2008: it surpassed 60% compared to the same period last year," the Kremlin source went on to say.
During their talks in Brest, Presidents Medvedev and Lukashenko will also discuss how bilateral agreements fixed in the Memorandum on the current stage of economic cooperation has been implemented.
The Memorandum was signed on December 14, 2007. "This is an underlying document that regulates, among other things, the delivery of Russian fuel and energy to Belarus and prescribes the mechanism of transition to new trade conditions. Russia granted Belarus a 1.5-billion-dollar credit in December 2007 to soften possible difficulties in its economy in connection with a step-by-step increase of prices for natural gas," the Kremlin source recalled.
Prospects for forming a common economic and customs space, currency integration and the harmonization of economic laws will also be vital topics for discussion.
"Close cooperation has been established in some branches of the
economy, 95% of customs tariffs have been unified. Besides, the sides are stepping up efforts to create a customs union of three countries-members of the Eurasian Economic Community - Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan," the Kremlin source went on to say.
Stronger economic cooperation opens new horizons for successful work in other areas of integration.
"Today, Russia and Belarus have a single migration space and maintain close interaction in foreign policy, security and collective defence. Humanitarian cooperation, including within the CIS framework, is also making progress," the Kremlin source stressed.
The sides are working hard to provide equal rights for the citizens of the two countries who have been given equal opportunities to get education, employment, pensions and social services.
