FAMILY SURVIVES LANDSLIDE IN CIAMIS, INDONESIA

Ciamis, W Java, Feb 9 (ANTARA) - Four residents of Sadapaingan village in Panawangan suburb of West Java`s Ciamis regency survived a landslide that had crushed their house on Tuesday morning.

Karna Kusandi, 58, said he and his three dependents rushed out of their ill-fated house soon after hearing the landslide sounds so that they could escape in time.

The landslide from a seven-meter-high cliff near his house was caused by torrential rain that had showered the village, Kusandi said.

"If we failed to rush out soon, we would have been buried because the landslide had destroyed the house`s walls and roof," he said.

Despite the absence of fatalities, Kusandi said the natural disaster had caused him to suffer material losses of Rp60 million.

He, therefore, urged the local government to provide him with financial assistance to rebuild his damaged house.

Over the past few weeks, torrential rains had been showering various parts of West Java Province.

On February 5, for instance, landslides also destroyed nine houses in three suburbs of Bogor city.

There were no fatalities in the natural disaster but this natural disaster had brought material losses to some people," a West Bogor sub-district government official said.

The landslides might be caused by the soil`s inability to absorb waters as a result of erosion due to densely-populated areas, Abdul Muid said.
