S. Korean technology, culture to be highlighted at Shanghai Expo

SEOUL, Feb. 10 (Yonhap) -- South Korea plans to highlight its cutting-edge technology and cultural heritage at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, government officials said Wednesday.

The Ministry of Knowledge Economy said the country will make an all-out effort to
create a positive image for people visiting the national and corporate pavilions
during the six-month long event.
The national pavilion, built by the government at a cost of 38.2 billion won, has
a floor space of 7,683 square meters and is located in A Block close to the
Japanese and Chinese pavilions.
South Korea also has a corporate pavilion, which houses 12 local companies such
as Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor, LG, SK and POSCO, and covers 4,012 square
meters. It took 29.9 billion won to set up the pavilion.
"The two pavilions along with a structure being built by Seoul City will be open
to the public as of May 1 when the Expo kicks off," the ministry said in a
statement. It said all preparations have moved forward without a hitch with the
displays to highlight the country's prowess in the information technology sector,
as well as in heavy industries and communications.
It said only a dozen countries including the United States, Germany, Japan,
Britain, France and Russia have built national pavilions exceeding 6,000 square
meters.
During the May 1-October 31 event, local movie stars are expected to make
numerous appearances at the Expo to meet with Chinese fans, the ministry said.
The country also plans to serve traditional foods and offer booklets and
brochures to attract visitors to South Korea in the future.
The exposition is being held under the eco-friendly theme of "Green City, Green
Life."
The ministry said the event is a registered fair of the Paris-based Bureau of
International Expositions with organizers expecting over 70 million visitors
overall with 5 million coming from abroad.
A record 192 countries and 50 international organizations said they will take
part in the international gathering.
The Expo grounds cover 5.28 square kilometers and are located on both sides of
the Huangpu River that run through China's economic capital.
