NKorean patrol ship invades SKorean territorial waters
TOKYO, June 23 (Itar-Tass) - A North Korean patrol ship invaded on
Sunday South Korean territorial waters, reported a spokesman of the South Korean military command in Seoul.
According to the spokesman, a North Korean patrol speedboat "crossed the northern delimitation line in the Yellow Sea in the morning and stayed there for 30 minutes". "The invasion was supposedly attributed to a chase of Chinese fishing vessels, engaged in commercial fishing in this area".
A representative of the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff noted that the North Korea ship "quickly returned to its waters after a warning signal, radioed by the South Korean navy". He noted "this is the sixth such violation of South Korean territorial waters since the start of the year."
According to South Korean authorities, North Korea violated the sea border in the Yellow Sea 135 times between 2001 and 2007. The so-called northern delimitation line (NDL) has been playing the role of this border for over 50 years. It was unilaterally drawn at the end of the 1950-1953 Korean War by the commander of the UN troops after the participants in the talks on armistice could not come to agreement on drawing an official borderline.
Although Pyongyang has been observing it all these years, it has not officially recognised it and insisted on its review, presupposing to shift the NDL to the south. This area was an arena of fierce clashes in 1999 and 2002. Both sides suffered serious losses in manpower and materiel.
