Medvedev to hold in Tomsk meeting of RF modernisation comsn.

TOMSK, February 11 (Itar-Tass) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on
Thursday will hold in Tomsk a meeting of the RF commission on
modernisation and technological economic development.
The Tomsk region is one of the leading Russia's centres of innovation
development. The first in the USSR technological park and the first in
Russia interuniversity students' business incubator were opened here. In
2005 Tomsk raised its innovation status winning the governmental
competition for the right to host a special economic zone for technology
development.
Before the meeting Medvedev will also visit the Tomsk
Electromechanical Plant. This enterprise is a major producer of mining
equipment. A centre of research and development has been created and is
successfully operating here, it makes it possible to launch the own
products' manufacturing according to the principle "from the idea to
products." The head of state will also be able to familiarise with the
products of small innovation enterprises created by Tomsk Polytechnic
University.
The president's working programme includes meetings with students of
this and other Tomsk universities. The Tomsk region possesses a developed
research and educational complex the core of which consists of six
universities. Tomsk Polytechnic University is the oldest technical higher
educational establishment in the Asian part of Russia founded in 1896.
Today it unites eight learning institutes, 10 faculties, 100 departments,
three research institutes, 17 scientific-educational centres and 68
research laboratories. The university has formed a belt of 50 small
innovation enterprises with the use of intellectual property facilities of
Tomsk Polytechnic University. In October 2009, the university was awarded
the category of the National Research University.
