WILIARDI WIZARD SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS

Jakarta, Feb 11 (ANTARA) - Former South Jakarta police chief Wiliardi Wizard, accused of complicity in the murder of a busiinessman, was sentenced to 12 years in jail by a South Jakarta district court jury here on Thursday.

Earlier, the prosecution had asked the jury to sentence Wiliardi to death for his role in the premeditated murder of Nasruddin Zulkarnaen, director of a state-owned company.

"We find the defendant's guilt to have been legally and convincingly proven," the jury's chairwoman, Artha Theresia, said.

Wiliardi had taken part in the plot to murder Nasruddin Zulkarnaen, and had thereby committed acts punishable based on Article 55 paragraphs 1 and 2, and Article 340 of the Criminal Code, she said.

Meanwhile, in response to the sentence, Wiliardi's lawyer, Satrawan Paparangi, said his client would file an appeal with a higher court.

The high-profile murder had also led to the trial of former Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chief Antasari Azhar who was accused of having masterminded Nasruddin's murder to silence the latter over an affair he had allegedly had with the dead man's third wife, Rani Juliani.
