PADANG NEEDS RP14 TRILLION FOR POST-QUAKE RECONSTRUCTION

Padang, W Sumatra, Feb 11 (ANTARA) - The Padang city administration would need Rp14 trillion for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of damaged or destroyed infrastructure by the 7.9-magnitude quake on September 30 last year.

It is a heavy burden for the Padang city administration, which is therefore hoping for any possible assistance, Padang deputy Mayor Mahyeldi Ansyarullah said on the occasion of the stone breaking ceremony of the reconstruction of an elementary school in Gerung Laweh in Padang, Thursday.

Padang city suffered Rp 8 trillion in material loss caused by the strong earthquake, he added.

A total of 1,180 school buildings collapsed in the quake.

One of the international institutions which had given assistance for the reconstruction of the schools included the Taipei Economic and Trade Office (TETO), Taiwan.
