PMI SETS BLOOD-COLLECTING TARGET AT FOUR MILLION POUCHES
Jambi, Sumatra, Indonesia, Feb. 12 (ANTARA) - Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) chairman M Jusuf Kalla has set the organization's blood collection target for the next two years at four million pouches or enough to help two percent of the population.
"The formula is 4x4. It means that four million pouches of blood will be the stock for four days. At present, it's only adequate for two days," Kalla said here on Friday.
Four million pouches of blood constitutes two percent of the population. The safest stock should be three percent of the population, he said, adding that PMI's current stock was 1.7 million pouches of blood per year.
This year's target has been increased to three million pouches of blood, and over the next two years it would be increased to four million, he said.
To achieve the target, there should a cultural change, he said.
"Make donating blood part of people's life style. If you have donated your blood, it's not yet perfect and not humanitarian sympathy. So, it's not completed," he said.
"Don't waste your time for street rallies. We should change our slogan from 'Fight until the last drop of blood' into 'Fight from our first drop of blood for humanity," the former president said.
He suggested that blood donation units be opened in public areas such as shopping centers to facilitate people who wished to donate blood.
PMI will launch public campaigns in public areas such as shopping centers, bus terminals, railway stations, and places of worship, as well as in companies and mass organizations. Blood donation units will also be set up at universities.
The public campaigns, bearing the theme "Donating Blood is Healthy," will be carried out in conjunction with the setting up of permanent blood donation units at strategic locations.***
