TRADITIONAL MARKETS IN DISTRICTS TO BE REVITALIZED

Jakarta, Feb 12 (ANTARA) - The Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises Ministry plans to revitalize at least one traditional market in each of the country's 540 districts and municipalities with a total budget of Rp540 billion, a spokesman said.

The ministry would propose the allocation of the needed funds in the amended 2010 State Budget, said Ikhwan Asrin, deputy for business and market networks to the cooperatives, small and medium enterprises minister, said here Friday.

If the funds could not be disbursed in the 2010 budget year, the traditional markets revitalization program would be implemented in stages over the next five years, he said.

In the original 2010 State Budget, the cooperatives, small and medium enterprises ministry had been appropriated Rp733 billion but en effort would be made to raise the amount to Rp1.7 trillion in the revised 2010 State Budget, he said.

"The budget for our regular activities is certainly small in amount and therefore we hope our proposal for a raise in the revised State Budget will be approved," he said.

Ikhwan said the proposed Rp1.7 trillion would be used to increase the competitiveness of cooperatives, small and medium enterprises in the face of the Asean-China Free Trade Area (ACFTA) and revitalize traditional markets.

"Through traditional markets operated by cooperatives, we can easily overcome the problem of expired products and monitor imported goods," Ikhwan said.

He said each of the country's 540 districts and municipalities were projected to have at least one traditional market over the next five years.***
