Yanukovich expects Timoshenko to step down.
MOSCOW, February 14 (Itar-Tass) - The winner of the recent
presidential elections in Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovich, has said that the
incumbent Ukrainian prime minister, Yulia Timoshenko, should step down.
Yanukovich, the leader of the Party of Regions, didn't rule out early
parliamentary elections.
"I am sure that her five years in power have left her no chance to
keep her post. New forces have come to power. The old power, which the
Ukrainian people refused to recognize during the past elections, should
go. This is a democratic principle," Yanukovich said in an interview with
Yevgeny Revenko, the anchorman of the Russian weekly television news
program 'Vesti Nedeli'. The interview will be broadcast on Sunday.
According to Yanukovich, he will name his candidate to the prime
minister's post shortly after inauguration.
The future of Ukraine's parliament depends on negotiations, which
Yanukovich expects to begin already next week. He said that if the
parliament would be able to consolidate behind Yanukovich's program, for
which the majority of Ukrainians had voted, it would continue functioning.
"If not, there are going to be early elections. I will be open to my
voters," Yanukovich said.
