Iranian parliament firm to lower ties with UK

TEHRAN, Feb. 14 (MNA) - A senior lawmaker has said the Iranian parliament is determined to lower ties with Britain.
“Majlis (parliament) is seriously pursuing the issue of reducing relations with Britain, and in this regard it has started a wave of intensive negotiations with the Foreign Ministry and Supreme National Security Council,” Mohammd Reza Bahnor, the deputy Majlis speaker, told the Mehr News Agency.
Iran has accused Britain of fomenting post-election protests.
The deputy speaker added, “There is no difference between the U.S. and Britain in animosity with Iran.”
Bahonar said the Islamic Republic is constantly monitoring Britain’s behavior.
“The officials of this country should wait for a reduction of ties with Iran because of their interference… and should know that this is the direct result of their irresponsible behavior.”
In an open letter to Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the chairman of the Majlis Foreign Policy and National Security Committee, Britain’s Ambassador to Tehran Simon Gass said any decision by parliament to downgrade relations with Britain “would be regrettable.”
MP Esmaeil Kosari said the plan to reduce political and economic ties with London has been finalized at the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee which will soon be put to the parliamentary vote.
Kosari, the deputy chairman of the committee, also said the Majlis has held detailed talks with the representatives of certain ministries, including the Foreign Ministry.
The plan for lowering ties with Britain, which has been signed by 35 MPs, has been submitted to the Majlis Presiding Board; however, he said, the plan has been referred back to the committee for further study.
Asked whether according to the committee plan the level of relations would be reduced from a rank of ambassador to a level of charge d’affairs, he just said that the Foreign Ministry would decide based on the “Majlis approval”.
He went on to say if lawmakers do not back plan to downgrade ties with London then it should be said that “they are not the true representatives of the people.”
On reasons behind the letter by ambassador Gass, Kosari said that ties with Iran is in UK's interests and (Britain) is worried about losing these interests.”
