Fishing boat with 20 people capsizes, leaving 4 dead, 13 missing

SENDAI, June 24 Kyodo - A fishing boat manned by 20 crew members capsized and sank early Monday afternoon in the Pacific off the coast of Chiba Prefecture, leaving four of the seven people recovered dead and 13 others including 51-year-old skipper Yoshihiro Konno missing, the Japan Coast Guard said.

Details about the remaining three crew members who were rescued by a consort
vessel are yet to be known but they are not thought to be in a life-threatening
situation, the coast guard said.

The consort boat carrying the four who were confirmed dead and the three others
is expected to arrive at Onahama port in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, at around
7 a.m. Tuesday, it said.

The 135-ton Suwa Maru No. 58 from Iwaki had been anchored around 330 kilometers
east of Inubosaki Lighthouse in Chosi, Chiba Prefecture, the coast guard said.

The round haul netter was operating together with seven consort boats to fish
for bonitos and capsized after it was hit broadside by two rounds of waves
while the crew was resting at anchor, according to the boat owner. Bonitos are
caught during the night.

It was overcast with a southerly wind of around 36 km per hour and waves of
around two meters high, the coast guard said. Visibility was good.

The four who had been listed in critical condition were confirmed dead at 5:47
p.m., the coast guard said. They are Yoshihiko Ito, 44, Takao Tono, 53, both
from Rikuzentakata in Iwate Prefecture, Toshikazu Oikawa, 42, and Yoshio Sato,
59, both from Ishinomaki in Miyagi Prefecture.

In waters around the site where the Suwa Maru sank, two life rafts, which
appear to belong to the fishing boat, were drifting but carrying no one and
were picked up by the consort boat, the coast guard said. A net was also seen
floating nearby.

The coast guard said it was notified at around 2 p.m. by the consort boat that
the Suwa Maru had capsized.

Four of the consort boats continued to search around the scene, while the coast
guard sent five patrol boats there. The Air Self-Defense Force has also
dispatched a search plane and a helicopter.==Kyodo
