Quake of around 5 pts registered near Commander`s Islands

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, February 17 (Itar-Tass) - An earthquake
measuring 4.9 points on the open-ended Richter scale occurred at 10:43
local time Wednesday /22:43 GMT Tuesday/ in northwest Pacific in the
vicinity of the Commander's Islands archipelago, U.S. Geological Service
said.
The epicenter of the quake was located on the Bering Island some 265
kilometers to the east of the village of Nikolskoye, the Commander's
Islands only population center.
The information provided by the Americans was confirmed by
spokespeople for the Kamchatka affiliation of the Geophysical Service
reporting to the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Earlier, the same service said an earthquake measuring 4.3 points on
the Richter scale occurred off Kamchatka's eastern coast.
Spokespeople for the Kamchatka affiliation of the Geophysical Service
told Itar-Tass the quake was registered at 03:17 local time Wednesday
/15:17 GMT Tuesday/.
Its epicenter was located 165 kilometers to the northeast of the
regional capital Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and the seismic focus was
identified at the depth of 40 kilometers below the surface of the earth.
Crust tremors of up to 2 points could be felt in different parts of
Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
There have been no victims or destructions and the authorities did not
issue tsunami warnings in either case.
