PRESIDENT WANTS LOWER CHILD-PERSONNEL RATIO AT CHILD CARE CENTER
Jakarta, Feb 17 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the ratio between the number of children and that of care-givers at the Bambu Apus Children Social Care Center (PPKS) should be lowered.
The President made the remark during an inspection of the PPKS in Bambu Apus, East Jakarta, Wednesday morning.
"The ratio needs to be more reasonable, such as 1 to 7 or 1 to 8, or even 1 to 11 or 1 to 12, which I think is still difficult to achieve," the President said.
He also asked the Social Affairs Minister to think of ways to raise the number of the employees to enable them to work more effectively.
According to Child Social Service Director at the Ministry of Social Affairs Harry Hikmat, the number of the children at the PPKS in Bambu Apus reached 393, including 268 girls, but only 28 employees.
The President in the inspection was in the company of Minister of Legal and Human Rights Affairs Patrialis Akbar, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Laksono, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Defense Affairs Djoko Suyanto, Social Affairs Minister Salim Segaf Al Jufrie, and members of the presidential special staff.
PPKS is a unit of technical service handling the social welfare of children directly under coordination of the Social Service and Rehabilitation Directorate General.
According to the Data and Information Center of the Social Affairs Ministry the number of children with social welfare problems (0-18 years old) in Indonesia has reached 4,656,913.
PPKS Bambu Apus which has become a barometer in handling these children in Indonesia has five child care units.
The first, PSMP Handayani, a unit handling delinquent children who have violated the law.
Second, a unit dealing with school dropouts.
Third, Taman Balita Sejahtera yang mengkhususkan diri sebagai pusat pelayanan anak balita.
Fourth, a Social Development Center for Children (SDC) dedicated by Madame Ani Yudhoyono in 2006.
And the fifth, a Child Social Protection Home handling traumatic children victims of human trade, ignorance, violence and other cases.
The President later also inspected the facilities and infrastructure of the PPKS Bambu Apus on 10.5 hectares of land, including dormitories, consultation wards, library, polyclinic, data room and some other facilities.
The President also had a dialogue, shook hands and joined a group photo with the children. They also sang a song written by the head of state himself "Kuyakin Sampai Disana" (I believe I will be there).
In his address the President said the government will prepare a special system which would guarantee better social justice for the Indonesian people, especially the marginalized segment of the society.
The President is scheduled on Thursday to preside over a cabinet meeting with the agenda on efforts of the state to improve justice in Indonesia.***
