UNHCR: 856 thousand Afghan refugees returned home from Iran
Kabul, June 24, IRNA - United nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) bureau in Afghanistan declared here since year 2002 some 856 thousand Afghan refugees have returned to their country from Iran by sistance of UNHCR.
Spokesman of the agency in Kabul Mohammad Nader Farhad issued a press release here Monday saying "5,500 Afghan have left Iran voluntarily in the year 2008."
Now there are still around 3 million Afghan living in Iran either
legally or illegally," he was quoted as saying in the note.
Farhad said, "Afghans have been the largest groups of refugees'
population in the world for several decades while now 4 million and
200 thousand out of their 8 million refugee population have returned
to their country."
The agency has offices in 116 countries worldwide.
