GOVT TEAM TO REVIEW SOCIAL SERVICES SYSTEM, REGULATIONS

Jakarta, Feb 18 (ANTARA) - The government will set up a team to review the social services system and regulations to ensure justice for the marginalized segments of the people, a spokesman said.

Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Agung Laksono told reporters after a cabinet meeting here on Thursday, the team with members from various elements from offices under his coordination was given three months by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to finish its task.

The team would work under the supervision of Vice President Boediono and receive inputs from the Presidential Advisory Council.

"The team will review the existing system, laws, government or ministerial regulations and propose needed improvements," he said.

After being improved it was hoped they could ensure services in education, health and other welfare programs for marginalized people, he said.

People considered marginalized so far include senior citizens, the physically handicapped and prisoners. "So, later it is expected nobody will be marginalized any more. Everyone will receive proper treatment including services in the fields of education and health. Everyone will get equal treatment," he said.

Agung said President Yudhoyono had ordered the setting up of the team with regard to creating a better welfare system following the results of his recent inspection of a children's penitentiary in Tangerang and a social welfare service center in Bambu Apus, East Jakarta.

"Following the inspection the President gave directives and at the meeting just now we discussed the steps to be done," he said.
