NYOMAN SUSRAMA SENTENCED TO LIFE FOR KILLING JOURNALIST

Denpasar, Feb 15 (ANTARA) - The Denpasar district court sentenced Nyoman Susrama (47) to life imprisonment for masterminding the killing of local Radar Bali newspaper journalist Narendra Prabangsa (43).

Susrama, an Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDIP) member who was a successful candidate in a regional legislative election in 2009, was declared guilty of leading and executing a plot to murder Prabangsa.

The prosecution led by Nyoman Sucitrawan had demanded the death sentence for the defendant but the jury led by Djumain in its verdict lowered it to life.

The jury said in a session lasting around six hours that Susrama along with eight other men (tried separately) had been convincingly proven to have killed Prabangsa.

Prabangsa was beaten up with wooden sticks and punched with bare knuckles s at Susrama's home in Banjar Petak, Bebalang, Bangli, last February 11, 2009.

After knowing that Prabangsa had died Susrama and his friends wrapped him up and threw the body away at the Balatung beach in Klungkung.

Five days later, the body was found floating in Bungsil Bay waters in Karangasem, about five kilometers east of Belatung beach.

Susrama killed Prabangsa because he was upset by Prabangsa's writings in the Radar Bali about irregularities in a school building project carried out by Susrama.

Susrama said he would appeal the verdict.
