DIARRHEA ATTACKS JAKARTA FLOOD VICTIMS

Jakarta, Feb 15 (ANTARA) - Floods-related diseases have attacked hundreds of Jakartans.

A total of 507 flood victims suffering from diarrhea as well as respiratory and skin diseases had received free medical treatment of the Jakarta city administration, a health official said.

"They are from East and South Jakarta but their ailments are not so serious," Head of the Jakarta city health office Dien Emawati said here Monday.

Any of the flood victims in Jakarta was given free medical treatment and facilities, she said.

Seventeen hospitals in the capital city had been prepared to receive the patients with flood-related diseases, including the dengue, Dien Emawati said.

The Jakarta health office data showed that the majority of the flood victims in such areas as Bukit Duri and Bidara Cina, suffered from diarrhea as well as respiratory and skin diseases, she said.

There were no reports of dengue but it has spread after the rainy season ended, she said.

Some parts of Jakarta were inundated by flash floods last weekend after torrential rains showered the highlands of West Java's Puncak and Bogor areas.

As a result, tens of housing complexes and hundreds of houses in Jakarta were submerged.

The Puncak tourist resort area and Bogor have been the main sources of flash floods for Jakarta during the rainy season because 13 rivers flowing from these areas go through capital city before reaching the sea.
