FLOODED AREAS IN BANDUNG DISTRICT EXPANDING
Bandung, West Java Province, Feb. 19 (ANTARA) - Floods which have been hitting Bandung district, have expanded to wider areas and submerged the Baleendah-Bojongsoang road.
Earlier, the Dayeuhkolot-Bojongsoang road connecting southern Bandung and Bandung City, had been submerged under the floodwaters. The Baleendah-Bojongsoang road is an alternative way connecting the two areas.
The Baleendah-Bojongsoang road was inundated at a height of up to 30 centimeters, causing a bad traffic jam.
Thousands of houses were flooded, forcing local inhabitants to evacuate themselves to safer areas.
"We need to open more public kitchens. The existing ones are no longer enough," Cholil, a refugee, said.
Most of the flood victims have taken refuge at government's office buildings or in roadsides.
The floods have also submerged a number of fishing ponds.
Last Thursday, two people were killed and 12 houses located in the bank of Cikapunding river, collapsed because of the inundation.
Daily activities of Dayeuhkolot residents have been paralyzed because floods reaching height of between 30 cm and 200 cm.
Indonesia is now in the rainy season which has triggered floods in many parts of the country including Jakarta, Jambi (Sumatra), Pandeglang (Banten Province), Bandung and Kerawang (West Java), West Sumatra, South Sumatra Province, South Sulawesi, and Kudus (Central Java).
