VP CHAIRS MEETING ON MANAGEMENT OF CILIWUNG RIVER BANKS

Jakarta, Feb. 19 (ANTARA) - Vice President Boediono here on Friday chaired a coordinating meeting on the management of human settlements on the banks of the Ciliwung river in Jakarta.

The meeting which was held at the vice presidential palace, was attended by among others Public Housing Minister Suharso Monoarfa, Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto, and Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo.

The meeting was to follow up Boediono's visit to Ciliwung yesterday.

Early this week, the House of Representatives' Commission V had held a meeting with Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto as well as the Jakarta, West Java and Banten authorities.

Minister Kirmanto at the meeting with the Parliament said that the Ciliwung river flow would be cut in the Kampung Melayu area and be diverted to the Jakarta East Flood Canal.

The public works ministry, in cooperation with the public housing ministry and the Jakarta administration, will build low-cost apartments to accommodate people who are currently living on the Ciliwung river banks.

The Ciliwung is the main river that flows from Bogor district to the seas through the cities of Bogor, Depok, and Jakarta.

The Ciliwung River Basin with an area encompassing 347km2 starting upstream at Tugu Puncak, Bogor Province until downstream at the Jakarta Bay area which acts as the River Basins outlet.
