LTU PALU FACING COAL CRISIS

Palu, Feb 19 (ANTARA) - The operators of the coal-fired power plant PLTU Mpanau Palu in Central Sulawesi are facing coal supply, which would worsen the rotating power cuts in the provincial capital.

"Frankly, only 750 tons of coal are now left," assistant to the management of PT PJPP (Pusaka Jaya Palu Power), which operates the plnat in Palu, Djati Nugroho, said Friday.

He said such supply was enough to operate the power plant only until Saturday night (20/2).

Unless fresh coal shipments are received from East Kalimantan soon, two generators of the PLTU which has a capacity of 30 megawatts (MW) would have to stop operating.

The delayed coal shipments, he said, was due to bad weather conditions.

Actually, Anggrek Indah VII carrying 3,600 tons of coal to Palu had left on February 17, 2010, but the ship had to return to Samarinda because rough sea and high waves, reaching 6 to 8 meters high.

He said his side in the beginning had 7,400 tons of coal sent from Samarinda. The first shipment of 3,600 tons failed because the ship had to return to Samarinda due to bad weather.

PLN manager of Palu Nyoman Sujana said if the coal shipment for PLTU Mpanau stopped, power cuts would become worse, because the diesel power plant PLTD of PLN has a capacity of only 20 MW, while there are more than 200 subscribers in Sigi, Donggala, Parimo, and Palu.
