ASPERAM TO CONTINUE EXPORTING HANDICRAFT PRODUCTS TO SURINAME
Yogyakarta, Feb 19 (ANTARA) - The association of Mataram craft and small scale entrepreneurs in Yogyakarta (Asperam) would continue exporting silver handicraft products to Suriname, the association's chairman has said.
"We have successfully pioneered the export of silver and aluminum handicraft products of the association's members to the country (Suriname)," the Yogyakarta Asperam chairman, Budi Sarwono said here on Friday.
The association had twice exported such products to the country in 2009, although the value was not so high, Sarwono elaborating.
"Although it was only twice, at least the handicraft product exports have become a good beginning to open export markets in the country," he said.
Despite the still low demand from Suriname buyers for such products, it could be used to explore export cooperationwith the Suriname entrepreneurs, he said.
"Crafters sent their silver and aluminum products based on the Suriname buyers' demand," Sarwono said.
According to him, Suriname in particular, although it is a small country, its people are prosperous, and could become a potential market for handicraft products from Yogyakarta (DIY), although not many of the products entered the country.
Suriname people's purchasing power is high enough, and some of its people are descendants of Java, so there is emotional bond, thus they are interested in handicrafts from Java, including Yogyakarta, Sarwono added.
