Road transit through Iran up 23%

TEHRAN, Feb. 21 (MNA) – The Transit and Border Terminals Director of the Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization stated that in the first ten months of the Iranian calendar year (started March 2009) road transit through Iran increased 22.7 percent compared to the same period in the last year.

Saeed Abdollahi told the Mehr News Agency that in this timeframe over 5.7 million tons of goods had passed through the country, adding that in the 10-month period last year the figure reached 4.8 million tons.

He said railway transit climbed 3.9 percent compared to last year reaching 1.7 million tons.

Bandar Abbas has been the most active port for import and export transit in the country, while Sarakhs and Bazargan were second and third respectively in the entrance of goods, and Doqaroun and Lotfabad were second and third respectively in the exit of transit products, he said.

Abdollahi pointed out that during this time 253,000 trucks had passed through the borders of which 69 percent were Iranian trucks and 31 percent foreign haulers.
