Putin arrives in Khakassia, to visit hydropower station.
ABAKAN, February 24 (Itar-Tass) - Russian Prime Minister Vladimir
Putin has arrived in the Republic of Khakassia for a working trip. He is
to visit the Sayano-Shushenskoye hydropower station (SSHPS), where he will
take part in the start-up of the first-restored Hydropower Unit 6.
The power unit will be reactivated half a year since the breakdown
that was the major disaster in the history of Russia's power engineering.
The unprecedented breakdown that occurred at the SSHPS on August 17,
2009, led to the death of 75 people, destroyed and damaged the main
equipment of the station. Specifically, three out of ten hydropower units
of the station were destroyed and six damaged.
As early as this year, four power units out of ten are to resume
operation. Following the reactivation of Hydropower Unit 6, which was in
reserve at the moment of the breakdown and almost not damaged, Units 5, 4
and 3 are to be energized.
Directly on the hydropower station premises, Putin will hold a
conference on an electric power engineering investment programme. A
Russian government official said, " The putting into operation of power
generating facilities is to be sharply stepped up -- (to generate power)
up to 5,964 megawatts in 2010", as against 1,694 Mwt in 2009.
