Reliance on Leader essential for maintaining unity: Iran's Rafsanjani

TEHRAN, Feb. 24 (MNA) -- Assembly of Experts Chairman Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani has emphasized the pivotal role of the Supreme Leader in maintaining national unity.
He made the remarks at a meeting of the Assembly of Experts in Tehran on Tuesday.
“Experts (members of the Assembly of Experts) should try to maintain unity by relying on the Supreme Leader,” he said.
Only the Supreme Leader can establish harmony in the current situation, so “we should avoid exhibiting unwise behavior and should not allow the enemies’ to aim their arrows at the Leader of the Revolution,” he stated.
Rafsanjani, who is also the Expediency Council chairman, said that some foreign governments and some counter-revolutionary figures have always been opposed to the Islamic system, but those who believe in Islam and the revolution and are loyal to the Constitution, the principle of velayat-e faqih (rule by the supreme jurisprudent), and the Supreme Leader should be brought into the fold, “even if some of them have been deceived.”
There are some differences between enemies and those who are loyal to the establishment, and these distinctions should not be blurred, and those who are loyal to the Constitution should be respected, he added.
Commenting on the Supreme Leader’s insightful handling of the post-election incidents, Rafsanjani stated that the members of the Assembly of Experts should not allow loyalists’ unity to be destroyed and should attempt to prevent extremist actions.
“The Islamic system’s mercifulness, firmness, and wisdom should be displayed simultaneously.”
He went on to say that the nation knows the value of the revolution and will not allow anything to damage it, adding that as long as the people are happy with the revolution, they themselves will safeguard it.
On the post-election incidents, he said that during the events, both the police forces and protestors suffered damage and they should be compensated.
Hopefully, the country is close to realizing complete unity, and the people’s massive, vigilant, and significant turnout for the February 11 rallies proved it, he added.
On February 11, rallies were held across Iran to commemorate the 31st anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution.
Elsewhere in his remarks, he said that Western governments welcomed the International Atomic Energy Agency director general’s recent report about Iran’s nuclear activities and this shows that there are some plans behind this move.
The Western governments want to take two-thirds of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile and then they might give Iran nuclear fuel in return, but “negotiation in this regard is negotiation over submission,” he opined.
