TEHRAN, Feb. 24 (MNA) -- The Iranian deputy industry minister called on D-8 countries to create a strategy meant to expand industrial cooperation.
Mohsen Hatam said that at the industry ministers’ gathering in Tehran starting February 28 this suggestion will be approved by experts on the first two days of the conference and will finally be accepted by ministers on the third and last day of the meeting.
He stated that 11 specialized panels including car manufacturing, textiles, small industries, steel, cement, petrochemicals, energy, IT, foodstuff, transfer of technology and standards will be held.
The D-8 members include Iran, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.
The combined population of the eight countries is 800 million people, which is about 60 percent of the Muslim population, or close to 13 percent of the world’s population.
Following the “Conference on Cooperation for Development,” on October 22, 1996, and after a series of preparatory meetings, the establishment of ‘D-8’ was announced officially by the Summit of Heads of State in Istanbul, on June 15, 1997.
The objectives of ‘D-8’ are to improve developing countries’ positions in the world economy, diversify and create new opportunities in trade relations, enhance participation in decision-making at the international level, and provide better standards of living.
Around 400 domestic and foreign guests have been invited to the event.
