Chile quake tsunami is unlikely to hit Russia's Kamchatka.
PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, February 28 (Itar-Tass) -- A tsunami wave
generated by the devastating earthquake in Chile is unlikely to hit Russia'
s Kamchatka, a source in the local emergencies administration told
Itar-Tass on Sunday.
Earlier the Russian meteorological service warned that the magnitude
8.8 earthquake in the Pacific near the Chilean cost generated a tsunami
that might reach Russia's Far Eastern coast. "The tsunami is expected to
reach the Kuril Islands and Kamchatka's southern coast at about 14:00
local time (07:00 a.m. Moscow time) on February 28. Tsunami warning
centres are monitoring the situation," the service said.
According to the Kamchatka emergencies administration, so far the
situation in the region is under control, no tsunami alarm was announced.
