Sakhalin tsunami warning centre keeping watch on Chile quake tsunami.
VLADIVOSTOK, February 28 (Itar-Tass) -- The Sakhalin tsunami warning
centre is following the progress of the tsunami wave generated by the
magnitude 8.8 earthquake that shook Chile on Saturday.
The tsunami might reach Russia's Pacific coast located 17,000
kilometers off the earthquake focus Sunday afternoon.
On Saturday, the Russian Emergencies Ministry said the tsunami was
unlikely to hit the Russian Far East.
"After the first data of the earthquake were available, experts of the
Russian Emergencies Ministry made calculations. The results showed there
were no threat to Sakhalin and entire Russia's Far East," deputy head of
the ministry's information service Elena Chernova said. "Nonetheless, the
tsunami warning system on Sakhalin is in the standby mode. In case of
danger, the population will be warned beforehand," she added.
As of 02:00 a.m. Moscow time, the wave reached 30 settlements in
various Pacific countries.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, set up after the 1960 magnitude
9.5 earthquake in Chile, issued a Pacific-wide tsunami warning that
included 50 Pacific countries and stretched across the ocean from South
America to the Pacific Rim.
