1,360 new buses on Abu Dhabi roads by 2010
Abu Dhabi, June 26 (WAM) - The Abu Dhabi Department of Transport (DoT) yesterday unveiled a two-year programme designed to gradually overhaul the emirate's public transportation network and infrastructure in line with 'Plan Abu Dhabi 2030'. The announcement was made by Saeed Al Hameli, General Manager of the Public Bus Office at DoT, at a Press conference yesterday.
By the end of 2010, the DoT plans to service Abu Dhabi with 1,360 high calibre, brand new, handicap-accessible, world-class buses and has already designed Abu Dhabi's future bus route network, which will provide comprehensive coverage within cities and link the emirate's urban areas together. The buses will operate 18 hours a day, between 6am and 12.30am.
Al Hameli said Abu Dhabi would have 25 bus stations by the end of this year.
The General Manager of DoT said that the buses will work 18 hours a day starting from 6.00am to 12.30am. The project will be completed in phases starting June 30 with the gradual deployment of 258 buses as a short-term solution, 125 of which are new and 133 are refurbished.
This fleet will enter service gradually to service heavy traffic routes to immediately enhance commuter comfort and convenience, improve frequency and scheduled services.
A further 100 new buses are due to enter service in the first uarter of 2009 with subsequent phases following to cater for demand. All future phases aim to increase city, suburban and inter-city capacity by 50 per cent by the end of next year.
The new buses will initially service four new routes, followed by six additional routes in August with the goal to operate on 21 high frequency routes by the beginning of 2009 covering most of Abu Dhabi island.
