APA chief calls for closer cooperation between Asian organizations

KATMANDU, Nepal, March 2 (MNA)-- Secretary General of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA), Mohammad Nejad-Hosseinian, has called for closer cooperation between regional organizations to promote objectives of Asian integration and adoption of common legislations.
Nejad-Hosseinian, who was speaking during the 12th meeting of the Standing Committee of the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) on Sunday, described efforts to achieve Asian integration as the main objective for the cooperation between APA and other Asian organizations.
The Standing Committee of ICAPP represents parties from over 15 states and Asian regions with the aim of bringing together Asia's political elites in fraternal assemblies. The standing committee convenes twice a year.
ICAPP’s meeting ran from 26-27 of February in Katmandu, Nepal.
APA secretary general said, “With rich mineral and human resources Asia can find its rightful place in the world. Asia has great potential to not only find solutions to its problems and enhance the well-being of its population, but can also contribute to the advancement of the world economy.”
“APA and ICAPP can play significant role to promote democracy in Asia and find solutions to the problems associated with the democratization process in the continent,” he noted.
Touching upon the similarities between the objectives and the current agendas of APA and ICAPP, Nejad-Hosseinian said, “The two organizations can work together to promote cooperation and friendship in Asia and to join forces to address and find solutions to the problems Asian countries face.”
“Integration can be accomplished, inter alia, through capacity building in elements of good governance.
“In this context, one can refer to issues like political freedom, promoting integrity of political system, accountability of political figures, combating corruption, public campaign and education on civil and political rights,” he explained.
Nejad-Hosseinian urged APA and ICAPP to set up a joint working group to consider common areas of cooperation including strengthening the role of Asian political parties in promoting integration in Asia.
He further called for greater efforts on the part of both organizations to improve the transparency and accountability of Asian political parties and to cooperate to promote ‘the Declaration on Principles of Friendship and Cooperation in Asia’.
APA chief proposed a joint meeting of the ICAPP Standing Committee be held in 2010 to discuss the above issues.
