Iran summons Kyrgyz envoy over airliner carrying Rigi

TEHRAN, March 2 (MNA) – Iran has summoned the Kyrgyz ambassador to protest Bishkek after the Jundullah terrorist group leader Abdolmalek Rigi was arrested aboard a Kyrgyz airliner en route from the Dubai to Kyrgyzstan on Feb. 23.

Mohammadreza Sheibani, the assistant foreign minister for Central Asia, told the ambassador that Kyrgyzstan must respect international laws and conventions in the fight against terrorism, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

Sheibani said regional countries ought to respect international laws and briefed Kyrgyzstan’s top diplomat in Tehran that international law bans providing assistance or sanctuary for terrorist groups.

The Iranian official said Tehran is really concerned that certain regional countries are sheltering terrorist groups.

They Kyrgyz ambassador said he will notify his government of Iran’s protest.

Rigi was on a flight from the United Arab Emirates to Kyrgyzstan when he was tracked down by Iranian security forces on Feb. 23. He was detained aboard the flight and the plane was forced to land at Bandar Abbas Airport.
