FOREIGN MINISTRY SETS DIPLOMACY AS A PRIORITY FOR EXPO
By Vincent Low
BEIJING, March 8 (Bernama) -- Diplomacy surrounding the Shanghai World Expo
would be one of the top priorities of the foreign ministry this year.
The minister, Yang Jiechi, said 2010 was a very important year for China in
continuing to tackle the international financial crisis and promoting the
recovery of world economy.
He said, it was also a year to actively carry out all-around diplomacy,
apart
from firmly safeguarding China sovereignty, security and development interest.
Yang was speaking at a press conference on Chinese foreign policy Sunday, on
the sidelines of the annual meeting of the National People's Congress, China's
parliament.
"We are expecting over 100 political leaders and millions of people across
the
world to visit the Shanghai World Expo, the first time it is hosted by a
developing country.
"It is not only a grand event for socio-economic, science and humanity but
also
a big event in the diplomatic arena," he added.
The foreign ministry has set up a strong team to help and coordinate with
the Shanghai Municipality, making intensive preparations to facilitate the visit
of political leaders to the Expo and other parts of China.
To be officially opened on May 1, the Shanghai World Expo will be held until
Oct 31.
The event will see the participation of 190 countries and over 50
international organisations.
