Iranian president to visit Afghanistan today

TEHRAN, March 8 (MNA) – President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is due to travel to neighboring Afghanistan today to hold talks with President Hamid Karzai.

The one-day trip to Kabul comes at Karzai’s invitation.

The trip will be Ahmadinejad’s first visit to Afghanistan since he and Karzai were both reelected last year.

The visit is aimed at expanding bilateral ties between the two countries and discussing ways to resolve the war-torn country’s crises.

Tehran has frequently called for the complete withdrawal of U.S.-led forces from Afghanistan, saying their presence is fueling the Taliban insurgency and creating insecurity in the country.
