Iran to reduce women’s working hours

TEHRAN, March 8 (MNA) – The Supreme Cultural Revolution Council (SCRC) submitted a proposal to the Majlis on Sunday calling for amendment to the employment laws, including reduction in women’s working hours, with no decrease in salary.

According to the proposal, women will not have late and night shifts any more, the head of the secretariat of Women’s Socio-Cultural Council (WSCC) told MNA in an exclusive interview.

Akram Hosseini Mojarad described such changes as guarantees of women’s dignity and personal rights, who comprise a high proportion of the country’s working force.

Regarding the significance of women’s role in the family and the society, the proposal focus on the family’s rights and the spiritual health of the society, Hosseini Mojarad explained.

“The council called on the Majlis to exempt women from working night shifts except in medical professions,” Hosseini Mojarad noted.

She further stated, “If the proposal, which is in support of female workers, is approved by the Majlis (and then the Guardian Council and becomes a law), no employer will be permitted to force its female employees into night shifts.”

Based on the proposal an expert committee will be formed in order to define to what extent the working hours will be declined, she noted.

Women from all walks of life, single or married, are included in the proposal, Hosseini Mojarad said, calling women’s low physical ability compared to their male counterparts' as the main reason behind the proposal.

The council urged in a separate proposal to the Majlis that special privileges should be given to women heads of household such as shortening the distance between their house and workplace, and providing them with transportation, Hosseini Mojarad added.
