ALL MALAYSIANS TAKEN CARE OF IN NEW ECONOMIC MODEL, SAYS DPM
SUNGAI BULOH (Malaysia), March 9 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin gave an assurance that the interest of every Malaysian, regardless of race, is taken care of in the New Economic Model (NEM) to be launched by the government soon.
He also said that various quarters would be consulted and be given
opportunities to express their views and ideas on the NEM which was being
prepared by the Economic Advisory Council.
"I know that every Malaysian, not just the Malay Consultative Council (MPM),
wants to have a say. I assure you that all will be consulted. We have various
types of non-govermental organisations (NGO), not just MPM," he told reporters
after launching the "1Komuniti 1Koperasi" (1Community 1Cooperative-Society)
programme, here Monday.
"The Chinese have their own NGOs, the Indian have their own NGOs and all of
these economic and social NGOs probably have their own ideas, and we will take
that into account.
"We will ensure they will be given equal chance (to express views)," he
stressed.
Asked on the demand by MPM yesterday that the NEM be based on the 1970-era
New Economic Policy (NEP) and should comply with Article 153 of the Federal
Constitution that protects the Malay and Bumiputera’s (son of soil) special
position, Muhyiddin said the final decision on the direction of the NEM rested
with the government.
"Whatever decisions that the government makes from day one until today are
all constitutional, within the spirit of the Constitution, within the bounds of
what the Constitution has always been," he added.
Hence, he said, any race should not to be worried because the government was
aware of that.
"We understand that very well and I don't think any race needs to be
worried, there will be enough time for them to be given an opportunity to have a
look at what the proposed New Economic Model is all about," he said.
Muhyiddin said Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak would give
sufficient time for various groups to submit their views for the government's
perusal.
The government has decided that the fine-tuning of the NEM would go beyond
its planned launch at the end of this month because it would be incorporated
into the 10th Malaysia Plan.
