Nuclear technology is not a threat: Danish scholar

TEHRAN, March 9 (MNA) – Abdul Wahid Pedersen, the foreign relations manager of the Muslim Council of Denmark, says “nuclear technology is not a threat” in itself if it is used properly.

Pedersen who had visited Iran to participate in the international Islamic unity conference in Tehran in early March, told the Tehran Times that nuclear technology should not be monopolized by certain countries.

Following is an excerpt of the interview:

Q: Why certain Western countries are trying to monopolize nuclear technology?

A: There should not be a monopoly of this kind of technology for any country. Now there are some countries that have nuclear technology, nuclear powers, and nuclear weapons and they have made it their own monopoly. And I don’t know that with what right they have done that. But basically I think that all countries should abolish nuclear weapons.

Q: Why certain powers are trying to equal nuclear technology to nuclear bomb?

A: Nuclear technology itself is not a threat. Just like a knife, it is not a threat itself. We can cut bread with but you can also kill a man with a knife. So many technologies can be misused; even the basic and simple technologies can be misused. But nuclear technology is seen in the light of the recent development of global heating and etc, and then obviously nuclear power technology is one of the emission-free technologies. There is another toxic waste problem but we don’t have this high emission of CO2 from nuclear technology as we do from traditional fossil fuel.

So although I believe that there are other power supplies that could be even better and more efficient… but definitely seeing in that perspective nuclear power technology is cleaner than many of the other technologies that are being used today.

Q: Can Iran be considered as an example for the Muslim world in terms of scientific progresses and resistance against global arrogance?

A: Iran, as I am aware, is a country of immense culture and history and tradition. And this should never be forgotten. Iran is a country which stands up for itself and doesn’t yield to international pressure.
