Sochi elects a new mayor

SOCHI, the Krasnodar region, June 29 (Itar-Tass) - Early elections of the city mayor will be held in Sochi, the Black Sea, on Sunday. Two hundred and ten polling stations will open at 8:00 in the morning Moscow time.
A source in the city election commission told Itar-Tass that early
voting has been held in territorial commissions since June 16 and at
polling stations since June 25. About 5,000 Sochi voters have already made their choice. "As a rule, they are people who work or leave the city on the day of the vote," Valentina Tkacheva, the secretary of the city election committee, clarified.
Sochi has 291,500 voters. Those who have recently bought real estate in Sochi will be able to vote even if they don't yet have registration. "In this case, they should submit an application to the election commission. Voters who will vote in the territory of Sochi for the first time, will be included in additional lists," a commission source said.
Early elections in Sochi were announced shortly after the former mayor Viktor Kolodyazhnyi left his post. He is now heading an Olympic
construction corporation. At first, twelve contenders announced their
intention to run for the post of Sochi mayor. Seven of them have withdrawn from the race. One candidate was denied registration. As a result there are only four candidates left: the acting mayor of Sochi Vladimir Afanasenkov, Viktor Kuzminov, the deputy head of the Krasnoarmeisky region of the Krasnodar territory, the general director of the Novostroyinvest firm Ivan Mokanu and Yuri Dzaganiya, the first secretary of the Sochi city branch of the Communist Party of Russia. The city election commission didn't notice any violations of the election law by the candidates during the election campaign.
Twelve million roubles have been allocated from the municipal budget to finance the elections. All the polling stations are ready for the vote. It will last until 20:00 Moscow time. The city public transport will carry passengers free of charge until 23:00 on the day of the vote.
