Iranian officials censure U.S. general’s offensive remarks

TEHRAN, March 10 (MNA) -- Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has harshly criticized a U.S. general for his derogatory remarks about the Islamic Republic.

The murderous government of the United States is a government of thugs that has occupied Iraq and Afghanistan and has killed and injured hundreds of thousands of civilians, the parliament speaker said on Tuesday.

Larijani made the remarks in response to U.S. Central Command Chief General David Petraeus, who, in an interview with CNN on Sunday, criticized the Islamic Republic for its handling of the events following the June 2009 presidential election and called Iran a "thugocracy".

He said the United States has become politically isolated and has lost the respect of nations.

“This brouhaha will further undermine the U.S. position,” he added.

The U.S. is irritated about regional countries’ animosity toward its policies and this anger manifests itself in disparaging remarks, he noted.

The Iranian parliament speaker dismissed the rhetoric of change espoused by the current U.S. government and stated that these offensive remarks will expose its opportunistic policies.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast also lambasted U.S. General David Petraeus on Tuesday for his offensive comments about the Islamic Republic.

U.S. officials are furious and make comments that run contrary to moral principles, Mehmanparast said.

“The behavior exhibited by some U.S. officials resembles that of thugs… We are not exactly sure why they are furious. It may be due to the massive turnout for the February 11 rallies, the failure of their soft war against Iran, or the fact that their intelligence services’ support for the Jundullah terrorist group was revealed,” he noted.
